Your child has always made you smile – from that unforgettable day when they came into your life to the moment they were accepted into Texas A&M’s engineering program, you’ve had millions of reasons to be proud. So when your new college student calls you complaining of pain in the back of their mouth, you know their wisdom teeth have come in – and that they need to make a trip back home to visit their dentist in Deer Park. In this post, the team at Deer Park Family Dentistry explains the different types of tooth extractions and what you need to know about this common dental procedure.
What Types Of Tooth Extractions In Deer Park Are There?
Dr. Jane Reeves, Dr. Jason Peck, and Dr. Troy Tregre explain that there are basically two categories of extractions:
- Simple Extractions – This procedure is performed when your tooth has erupted in the mouth completely and can be seen by your dentist. To have this completed, we’ll numb the area completely to make sure you’re totally comfortable, then use a special dental tool called an elevator to gently wiggle the tooth back and forth to loosen it. Once it’s free enough, w’ll use forceps to complete the removal. Although this description may make you anxious, we assure you that we’ll keep you completely at ease during the process – we even offer sedation dentistry if you’re nervous or suffer from dental anxiety.
- Surgical Extractions – In the instances that a tooth hasn’t pushed its way through the gums correctly, the tooth is impacted, or the tooth has broken off at the gum line, your oral surgeon will perform a surgical extraction. In these circumstances, we generally sedate our patients and place them in a twilight state – where you’re relaxed, completely pain-free, but somewhat aware of what’s happening. Again, we will numb the area completely to make sure you can’t feel a thing, then we’ll make a small incision in the gum and surgically remove the broken or impacted tooth. This is most commonly performed in cases of wisdom teeth.
Regardless of the nature of your extraction, we can perform any removal you need. As your trusted and experienced source of oral healthcare, you’ll never have to worry about being referred out to a dentist you don’t know or have a relationship with, and you won’t have to wait weeks (or even months) on a waiting list to be seen by someone new.
