How Dental Insurance Works

Every dental insurance plan comes with its own set of fees and coverage stipulations. You should take time to learn how your unique policy works. In the meantime, we can provide a basic overview of the coverage that is standard among many Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans:

  • Preventive care is often up to 100% covered. This typically includes checkups, cleanings, X-rays, and fluoride treatment.
  • Minor services are usually up to 80% covered. Fillings and non-surgical tooth extractions tend to fall into this category.
  • Major services may be around 50% covered. Crowns, dentures, and certain oral surgeries are often classified as major services.

What Is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?

The biggest difference between dental and medical insurance is their focus. Medical insurance protects your systemic, overall health. It does not cover things like dental cleanings, checkups, and other routine oral services. Dental insurance does cover such treatments.

In some cases, there is a small amount of overlap between the two types of insurance. For example, they might both apply to certain types of major oral surgery.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

If you have a PPO dental insurance plan, you can use it at virtually any practice in the United States. You do not even need a referral! Our team is ready to welcome both in-network and out-of-network patients.

In-Network Coverage

If a practice is in-network with your insurance plan, it means they have a contract that controls prices and promotes certain standards of care. Often, out-of-pocket fees are lowest at in-network practices. At Deer Park Family Dentistry, our team is proud to be in-network with Delta Dental Premier.

Out-of-Network

Even if we are outside of your insurance network, we still invite you to see what we have to offer. We can file claims for all PPO plans, and you might be surprised by how much money you can save even when you go out of your network! Remember, when it comes to your oral health, the most important thing is visiting a care team whom you truly trust to take great care of your smile.
